Pavelski Prevails, Sharks Prevail, Joe’s 3 Points Continue To Give St. Louis The Blues.

Posted: March 30, 2011 in San Jose Sharks

What’s up sports fans? San Jose continue to make may job fun. The Sharks had St. Luis at the Tank and you know what the Blues are thinking, they’re thinking they can rebound and get revenge because they lost to them last time they were here. As the game progressed you could see why they would get excited about the chance to win because San Jose’s high scoring rookie sensation Logan Couture had went out with a devastating injury. So they thought they probably could get the win. Joe Pavelski had other ideas. The Sharks cruised in the first 8 minutes of the game with a 3-0 lead, but really had to deal with the loss of Couture to an injury that they are worried about because they don’t want him injured and because of the timing of the injury.

It’s just a few weeks till the playoffs and this is something you don’t want, one of your best rookies to go down now.  “You could see he was in pain,” Pavelski said. “He’s meant a lot to this team. He’s been great. He brings a lot of energy to our team. But we have guys who are more than capable of stepping up. We hope it’s nothing serious. Hopefully he doesn’t even miss a day. If it is (serious), hopefully he’s back before crunch time gets going.” Joe is so right, because they need Logan Couture. He’s a big part of their offensive strategy, a big part of the teams rally and go to guys, and part of their mental resilience that makes the Sharks hard to beat, with him out they’ll need someone else to be as tenacious, and as hungry.

Couture was helped off the ice by Ben Eager and Ryan Clowe, “I’m not sure how he’s feeling, but it wasn’t pretty,” Clowe said. What was also interesting about this game is that St. Louis out shot the Sharks 45-10, with Antii Niemi saving 42 of those 45 shots and the Blues goalie Jaroslav Halak only had to save 7 of the 10 shots he faced. He was pulled after allowing 3 goals. Sharks are playing at playoff level which is where they need to be right now. If they can get Couture back they will be where they want to be, clicking on all cylinders. Even the head coach of the Blues couldn’t ignore the way the Sharks are playing,  “It looks like they found their game,” Blues coach Davis Payne said. “Their puck movement puts them in a top-four spot and they have made a huge charge to get into that spot. Obviously, in this conference, if you are in the top four you are a pretty good team.”

Devin Setoguchi, Torey Mitchell, and Patrick Marleau all contributed with goals, and the Blues TJ Hensick scored to end his 16 month scoreless drought, along with Andy McDonald, and David Backes who scored in the third to keep the game interesting. “I think they have been doing everything that Todd has been preaching over the course of, probably the last month, and I thought we shot the puck early,” Yawney said. “I thought we broke them down by shooting the puck.” It’s really a nice win for the Sharks right now, they are showing stamina during a time when teams tend to slow down because of the pressure of trying to keep up with other teams, because the physicality of the game.  “Points are coming,” Pavelski said. “We’re playing good. It’s not just points. I feel confident with the puck. The line’s been playing good. We’ve had lots of chances.” Sharks playoff push is paying off, or is it just another season of despair?
